The Banyan Team

Banyan Capital Management is a team of focused professionals. Our clients enjoy direct access to their investment professional and administrative staff, ensuring them prompt and personalized attention.

Gary L. Watkins

Gary is the president and founder of Banyan Capital Management and is a 1973 graduate of the business school at The University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He has continuously served as an investment professional since 1982. Prior to founding Banyan, Gary worked for six years as an account executive with a major New York Stock Exchange member firm. Gary conducts an investment workshop for the Georgia Society of CPAs.

Gary has been active with Big Brothers Big Sisters for nearly all of his adult life. He began in 1975 as a Big Brother to a young man who had lost his father. Gary’s relationship to that individual continues today. He has served on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta.

Gary makes his home in Sandy Springs, Georgia. When he’s not poring over annual reports and other research, Gary can usually be found fishing one of his favorite trout streams or reading a history book.

Drew D. Estes

Drew is a portfolio manager at Banyan Capital Management. He received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alabama in 2012 and graduated from the University of Alabama’s joint JD/MBA program in 2016. Drew also completed Level III of the CFA program in June of 2016 and he may be awarded his charter upon completion of the required work experience.

Prior to joining Banyan, Drew worked in the captive insurance industry and published multiple articles on the subject.

Drew claims he has yet to “work” an hour at Banyan, so the majority of his leisure time is spent studying businesses. Besides that, Drew likes to spend time at the lake, pull for the Alabama Crimson Tide, and read.

Charlene E. Beaton

Charlene joined the Banyan Capital Management team as Office Manager and Portfolio Administrator in early May 2008. Charlene’s responsibilities include portfolio administration, accounting functions, and overall operation of the office.

Charlene received her Bachelor of Social Work from Salem State College in Salem Massachusetts.

Charlene has professionally served as financial officer of a privately owned corporation as well as executive assistant to the chief executive officer. She enjoys church activities, spending time with family, volunteering and reading.

  • Being a value investor usually means standing apart from the crowd, challenging conventional wisdom, and opposing the prevailing investment winds. It can be a lonely undertaking.
